When I was 18 in college, I read about Ogimi Village, in Okinawa in Dan Buettner’s book on Blue Zones. It was a dream to visit to see where people live the longest in the world. 15 years later, I made it. No secret formula- a lifestyle that revolves around the sea, gardens and community. The last destination on this Japan trip.

Got to meet a 93 year old obachan 👵🏼, cacao, surf on their reef break, shikuwasa trees everywhere- the island’s main citrus 🍋‍🟩 forest therapy walk by Yanbaru National Park, chestnut zenzai shaved ice, then there was a special festival at their elementary school with the lion dances and performances. “The word ecology comes from the Greek oikos, meaning “home,” and logos, meaning “study”—together, “the study of the home.” For six weeks, Onishi has been that home for me, a place where I learned through quiet, daily acts of reciprocity with the land. Coming from the tropical forests of the Caribbean, witnessing autumn unfold here—ginkgo turning gold, persimmons ripening, and the harvest of edamame—has been a gentle, transformative shift.

During my residency, I explored the connections between people, plants, and the land through three bodies of work. In Cocoa Flora, I honoured a dear friend, Javed, a farmer and chocolatier, offering cocoa tea as a gesture of remembrance and reflecting on the cycles of life and loss. Forest Chorus celebrates the quiet synergy of mushrooms, birds, and nests, echoing the web of life that sustains both Onishi and my own small cabin home. In Impermanence, I captured the fleeting beauty of gardens, wildflowers, and seasonal blooms, using clay, hand-dyed textiles, and cyanotype to preserve moments before winter arrives.

This residency was also my first wood firing. I experimented with six different clays, exploring slip-casting, hand-building, and wheel-throwing techniques, letting the forms respond to the heat and ash from the kiln. Through all these works, I sought to listen, observe, and respond to the rhythms of this place—its gardens, rivers, mountains, and neighbours—while carrying traces of my own home and the life I tend there. Each piece is an offering, a reflection of the generousity of the land and the quiet reciprocity that exists between humans and nature”

Kiln Unloaded @shirooniresidency. Made it back from Tokyo and Chiba just in time to take the pots out. Was my 1st wood firing and learned a lot, some happy surprises and lessons for next time. So many beautiful pieces and hard work! Now one more sidequest before setting up for the exhibition happening next weekend.

The end ⏳ Biggest moment- moving into the cottage on a mountain a longtime dream of my mother 🕊️ A felt sense of home, which I never had before. Within myself and actually, a nest to return to 🏡

Earlier this year, I met a graphite artist, who inspired the idea of playing with quick sketches on clay. Had fun using an underglaze pencil, layered with glaze. My fave tropical flowers in this limited batch:

Now to start gathering ingredients and experimenting back home. So much science behind it, baby steps. As John says “try it and see”. Here we go 💫🧙🏽‍♀️

From dad’s garage to a lil pottery studio of my own 🏡 ✨💫 A journey learning about plumbing, electricals, masonry, carpentry and painful mistakes. Restoration is so hard! Still figuring things out.

Now that I’m home, back to working on that collection for @paperbasedbookshop , @cocobelchocolate and Christmas just around the corner 🎄 & an exciting update in Oct! 💃🏻
